SAWYER CERTIFICATIONS FOR CROSSCUT AND CHAINSAW COURSES

SWV will again be offering certification and recertification classes for crosscut and chainsaw.

Please note the following regarding these classes:

  • Recertification for crosscut or chainsaw is a 1-day class. You must have a previous certification to enroll in the recertification course for crosscut or chainsaw.
  • Certifications for NEW sawyers is a 2-day class
  • There is no charge for the sawyer course(s)
  • ALL SAWYERS must have a CURRENT Red Cross CPR/First Aid card in order for your sawyer card to be valid.
  • A current CPR/First Aid card is NOT required to attend the course
  • All First Aid/CPR certifications have to be OSHA certified – meaning you cannot get an online certification – it has to be in person and you have to demonstrate your skills
  • There is a charge for the First Aid/CPR courses given by the Red Cross or equivalent provider

CHAINSAW COURSES (Tentative based on Dave Moser’s recertification as a "C" Sawyer)

  • Recertification: Friday May 15. MiWuk Ranger Station (1/2 day classroom), 1/2 Day skills assessment in the field (location TBD)
  • Certification – New Sawyers: Saturday, May 16, Miwuk Ranger Station (full day classroom), Sunday May 16 skills assessment (location TBD)

CROSSCUT RECERTIFICATION

  • Recertification: Friday May 29. MiWuk Ranger Station (1/2 day classroom), 1/2 Day skills assessment in the field (location TBD)
  • Certification – New Sawyers: Saturday, May 30, Miwuk Ranger Station (full day classroom), Sunday May 31 skills assessment (location TBD)

Directions to the MiWuk classroom and the locations of the skills assessment will be provided to any sawyer signing up for the course(s).

\Notes about Personal Protection Equipment (PPE):

  • ALL SAWYERS must have appropriate PPE
  • Crosscut Sawyers
    • Hard Hat
    • Long sleeve shirts
    • Eye protection (sunglasses, prescription glasses generally ok)
    • Gloves
    • Sturdy boots
    • Long pants (no shorts)
  • Chainsaw Sawyers
    • Hard Hat
    • Long sleeve shirts
    • Eye protection (sunglasses, prescription glasses generally ok)
    • Sturdy boots
    • Gloves
    • Long pants (no shorts)
    • Chainsaw Chaps
    • Hearing Protection

SWV can provide some PPE (Hard Hats, potentially chainsaw chaps and hearing protection).

SWV will provide crosscut saws for skills assessment.
SWV may provide chainsaws for skills assessment. Volunteers may provide/use their own equipment as appropriate.
